APD Launches Gun Surrender Program After Two-Year Hiatus

After a two-year break due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Austin Police Department will host a Gun Surrender Program. This initiative aims to promote responsible gun ownership, provide education on properly securing firearms, and give community members a chance to turn over unwanted guns and ammunition with no questions.

The first event will take place on Tuesday, October 25, 2022, from 3-8 p.m. at the Robert Martinez, Sr. Central East Substation, 812 Springdale Rd.

Below are instructions for the event:

  • Do not walk into the substation with a visible gun or ammunition.
  • Unload the gun.
  • Put the gun and ammunition in separate bags.
  • Leave the gun or ammunition in the car (trunk or back seat) or bagged (if on foot).
  • Tell an officer you are there to turn in a gun, and they will safely retrieve it.
