Test Before You Go To Protect Loved Ones During Upcoming Holidays and Gatherings

This time of year, many families and friends will be traveling and gathering. While Austin Public Health (APH) monitors case and hospitalization levels, the public is asked to test before gathering and be sure you are up to date with your vaccines to protect yourself and others from COVID-19.

On Wednesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced it’s extending its federal mask order for travel as it continues to monitor the spread of the omicron BA.2 subvariant. According to the CDC, BA.2 now makes up more than 85% of U.S. cases.

“Many people will be gathering indoors with loved ones who are high-risk this time of year. This is different than spring break where we saw more traveling,” said Dr. Desmar Walkes, Austin-Travis County Health Authority. “Be mindful when visiting those who are at risk for COVID-19. Celebrate where social distancing is possible, and wear masks where it’s not.”

This time last year, 26.47% of the Travis County population 16+ were fully vaccinated. The vaccine was still limited and many were not eligible. Within the course of the year, the community experienced two surges that included new variants such as delta and soon after, omicron.

Now those ages five and older in the community are 73% fully vaccinated but boosters are vital to curbing this pandemic. Only around 33% of those who have received their first two doses have also received an additional dose.

“Throughout the pandemic, we’ve seen families devastated by COVID-19,” said Director Adrienne Sturrup. “We have the tools to keep each other safe and APH staff are here to help from providing easy access to testing before and after your gatherings to giving free vaccines and boosters, even this weekend.”

Testing is available at Metz Elementary Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Vaccines are available at Old Sims Elementary on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 2 to 7 p.m. and on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dedicated APH staff will work to ensure both sites continue their regular hours this weekend.

Following the CDC and FDA, APH approved additional booster doses for older adults and certain immunocompromised individuals. These booster doses are available at all APH sites, as well as doctors’ offices and pharmacies.
