Austin Public Health Reopens Two Neighborhood COVID-19 Testing Sites As Spread of Delta Variant Accelerates

As cases and hospitalizations for COVID-19 continue to rise steadily in the Austin metropolitan area, Austin Public Health (APH) is reopening two neighborhood testing sites:

George Morales Dove Springs Recreation Center - Beginning July 22

  • 5801 Ainez Dr, Austin, Texas 78744

  • Tuesday-Friday, 1-7 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

St. Johns Testing Site - Beginning July 29

  • 7211 N Interstate 35 Frontage Rd, Austin, Texas 78752

  • Tuesday-Friday, 1-7 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

"Community-based sites help protect those most at risk," APH Interim Director Adrienne Sturrup said. "APH staff have been incredibly dedicated to doing everything they can to lessen the impact of the virus.  With the presence of the Delta variant, access to free testing will be an important tool to catch disease early and guide our other efforts – including vaccination, case investigation, and more. "

It is important for individuals who may be experiencing symptoms to get tested for COVID-19 and stay home from work if they are sick to help prevent further spread. APH encourages those with insurance or a primary care provider to contact their doctor for an assessment.  Other  testing options for those with insurance  include  pharmacies  and urgent care centers.

Neighborhood testing sites  do not  require an enclosed  vehicle,  reducing  the barrier  of needing a  car.  Patients  may  arrive  by  foot,  on a  bicycle  or motorcycle,  or  in a  vehicle.  All individuals  are required  to  wear  a face covering when arriving for testing.

Testing is available with or without an appointment. However, scheduling an appointment is recommended to save time on-site and confirm test availability for a given day.  Individuals can schedule a test at online at  http://covid19.austintexas.gov or by calling 3-1-1 or 512-974-2000. Individuals unable to access the testing sites can also call the equity hotline  at 512-972-5560 to see if they qualify for an at-home test.

As with all testing sites, all medical information provided for testing and contact tracing is confidential, and immigration status is not asked.
