Austin Trail of Lights 2023: How to get there and road closures

The Austin Trail of Lights began December 8 and runs through December 23. Here’s what you need to know about getting there and how the event will affect traffic and Zilker Park usage.

For thorough details on the best ways to arrive, go to austintrailoflights.org/event-faqs. Here are the basics:

  • Parking: If you plan to drive, pre-paid parking on site is required on all nights. There are no drive-up parking sales.

  • Shuttles: Shuttles will be available from Republic Square (422 Guadalupe St.) and Toney Burger Event Center (3200 Jones Road)

  • Neighborhood no parking restrictions are in effect. Signed “no parking areas” are actively enforced on event days.

  • Transit: Take CapMetro routes 3, 30 or 803.

  • Walking, biking, scootering and carpooling to Trail of Lights is encouraged.

Street closures

There are full street closures around Zilker Park every night through Dec. 23 except Dec. 11 and 18. However, those two nights are designated as rainout back-up nights, so it is possible streets could be closed then as well.

Streets closed 5-11 p.m. on active nights are:

  • Barton Springs Road from Azie Morton Road to MoPac

  • Stratford Drive from Paige Drive/Riley Road to Barton Springs Road

  • Lund Street from Bluebonnet Drive to Azie Morton Road

Normal park usage

The Great Lawn of Zilker Park is partially open during the weeks of Trail of Lights. A portion of the area north and east of the Rock Island closes for holiday event set-up. The upper field areas will be open throughout the remainder of 2023 for public access and do not close. Free public parking is available daily in the rock area off Stratford Drive or until the roads close nightly. The City is providing an access map, which includes parking availability.
